2-XL Music

One of the great things about 2-XL was the music he would play. A lot of it made for great anthems and inspired us to write lyrics to them or stories around them. For me personally, it started a love of synth music that I still have to this day.

It took us the better part of 25 years, but Frank and I have finally tracked down just which music library service that 2-XL Music came from, and who the composers were!

2-XL used the EMIL ASCHER music library service, which distributed many international library music records in the US. I've been able to confirm that 2-XL music included records from:

  • KPM Music Library
  • Bruton Music Library
  • Parry Music Library
  • Musique Pour L'Image

Special thanks has to go to:

  • Andrew Hepburn and his eBay auctions. Not only for including sound samples, but for his dedication to music and all his direct assistance in searching through his collection to help me identify some of this music. Mr. Hepburn is a fantastic person to deal with, both personally and professionally!
  • classicthemes.com from their History of Production Music page;
  • www.clifandshads.co.uk for their Brian Bennet discography;
  • My buddy FRANK for helping me connect the dots and giving me my first leads on where to look!

We still need help! Listed below are 15 second music samples, specifying which 2-XL tapes they come from. If anyone knows ANYTHING about them, PLEASE e-mail me and let me know!

Originally I said I wouldn't post full-length MP3s, but now that there's free streaming players I've decided to post just the songs that 2-XL sings. I figure those are changed enough from the original library music albums that they shouldn't upset anyone. These are not all of 2-XL's songs but they're all I've converted, so I'll be adding more when I get around to making them.

However I will NOT distribute these or any other mp3s, so please do not ask. I don't want my first contact with KPM or Bruton to be a cease-and-desist order! The samples below should be small enough so as not to upset KPM but just enough to help you identify the piece of music in question.

    Hit it, Maestro!

  • 2-XL MUSIC LIST WITH CLIPS
Here's a partial list of all the 2-XL Music used, and what tape it's on. More information will be added as I piece it together and get more sound samples made.
    IMPORTANT NOTES:
  • Titles in "italics with quotes" are unofficial titles that Frank and I made up, because we don't know the real title yet...
  • Although the original library music recordings were in stereo, all 2-XL tapes appear to have been made in mono. Also, they appear to run a touch slower on these 8-tracks.
  • Although there are many songs used clean and complete, many others used beep tones to mark how much time had elapsed, and/or had comments by 2-XL. These are noted in the "COMMENTS" box.
  • There are plenty of cases where only 60 seconds of music was needed, so a song is cut short. These are also noted in the "COMMENTS" box.
  • When KPM would release a song, they generally put all the different versions on one record. However Bruton would scatter them, putting each different mix on completely different records. On the plus side, they did at least keep the same song title. As a result, the actual album I have listed might end up being a different mix than the one the version that was used on 2-XL.
  • These clips come from the US releases of these tapes only. I know Canada changed some of the music, but I've never gotten ahold of the UK versions to know if the music was any different on those.
  • If anyone knows ANYTHING about any of these tracks -- be it the composer, the album its from, other places it was used -- PLEASE e-mail me and let me know! Thank you!!

That song was used as "The 2-XL Song of Numbers" on Talking Calculator and Number Game, but it's a completely different arrangement. Ironically Frank called this one "2-XL the Sailor" before we ever even knew about the "Playing with Sailors" version. I'm betting this one will also turn up on a Bruton album, maybe even under the same song title.

"Li De La Ruse" and "Nikki St. George" were pseudonyms for Delia Derbyshire and Brian Hodgson, pioneers of electronic music. Frank has noticed a similar feel between this track and a song called "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue." It turns out that that "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue" was originally written by Richard Rogers in the 1930s, and the version that Frank heard was a cover version arranged by Brian Bennett with the band he was in, the Shadows. (Thanks to Robert Thoresby for the additional background info!!)
So, does this mean that the library piece on this tape is another one of Brian Bennett's KPM pieces, inspired by his previous work on "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue"...?

I LOVE this one, but my friends tease me that it sounds like it came from the movie "Shaft." But this one just jams. And I swear the 2-XL staff must have been deliberately jamming along with it, because everything, the beeptones and 2-XL's comments, just flow with the rhythm.
The version used by 2-XL is actually the underscore mix, with an additional link repeating the closing line (which works wonderfully, imo). The original mix on the KPM album (Boogie Strut [a]) runs twice as long and has some great strings and a saxaphone. If you like this track, you owe it to yourself to hunt down this album!

Miscellaneous 2-XL Music I Need to Place

I know it's a little weird that I know the KPM info for this one but not which 2-XL tape it's on, but here's why: when I was a kid I borrowed a 2-XL tape from a friend, which had this music on it. Before returning the tape to him, I copied the music onto a cassette tape. And I have yet to rediscover which 2-XL tape it was I first got it from! But I recognized it as soon as I heard it again.

    BLUES FOR 2-XL
    15-second .wav clip
In 1996, White Zombie guitarist J. Yuenger released a track called "Blues for 2-XL" on the CD Guitars That Rule the World Vol. 2: Smell the Fuzz - The Superstar Guitar Album. And yes, it actually includes clips of 2-XL himself in it!

You can read J. Yuenger's comments on this song and how he thought 2-XL was perfect for it at the ZombieLand II website.

The CD is apparently out of print, but ZombieLand II was gracious enough to provide a link to it on Amazon.com where you can still get it used. I got my copy there for just $4.98, and that was after shipping, which is a very reasonable price if you're only interested in it for just the 2-XL song. And if you're into guitar rock in general, the CD also has tracks from Billy Corgan, Ace Frehly, John Christ (formerly of Danzig) and Robert Fripp of King Crimson. Kudos to the folks at Zombieland II for compiling so much information on this one song, so that 2-XL fans could enjoy it too!

As has also been reported on the Unofficial 2-XL Home Page, there is also a band named 2XL. But their name has nothing to do with the 2-XL robot, and they don't play any of his music.

    OTHER MUSIC BY 2-XL COMPOSERS
This part still has to be organized, but I can say that Brian Bennett released an CD that includes two of his albums called "Rock Dreams / Voyage" that has some pretty fantastic stuff on it. Much more to come!

    RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SIMILAR STYLE MUSIC
Again, we need to organize more for this section, but if you like 2-XL music, then right now I can recommend the following albums:
