Other Comments: This is a very early 1978 tape, and as such 2-XL is using his early stiffer voice. Even though this tape uses a little booklet, it only has one program (another sure sign of it being an early tape) and no music to speak of. 2-XL has you turn him off to do every puzzle, without even using the traditional "turn 2-XL off" sound.

Most of the booklet puzzles are reading comprehension, where 2-XL has you read a page and then asks you questions about what you read. With one of them he gives you enough information that you can get by without it, but on all the others the booklet is essential. Alas, this is the one booklet I haven't been able to get ahold of. I suspect that this tape was discontinued fairly early, which (a) makes the tape itself rather rare, and (b) makes the booklet even more so.

The program also has three regular questions, where the book is not needed.

This tape also features the first try at Talking Calculator, and it was done without a card! Instead, the instructions on which buttons you should press for each function were printed in the booklet. However, the card from either "Talking Calculator" or "Math & Number Games" can be used instead and it will work just fine.

* A NOTE ABOUT PRINTING THE BOOKLET: This booklet was made in pdf format, courtesy of Brandon. Thanks, Brandon! The advantage to this is you can now download the entire booklet at one time, manipulate it for printing however you want using Adobe Acrobat, and the text looks incredibly clear. (To download this, right click on the link and select "Save Target As.") The only disadvantage is if you have a computer that can't use Adobe Acrobat. For those people, I plan on adding my standard jpg version later.

A NOTE ABOUT MUSIC: All music titles have been arbitrarily chosen by Frank and myself. These titles were picked based on many different things: the program we first heard the song on, or the project we first used it in, or whatever imagery it made us think of the most. 15 second wav samples (approximately 325k each) have been included for your convenience to be used as a reference. The running times listed in the description above are NOT the sample length. They are the length of the song as it is used on the 2-XL tape pictured.
